Scree Alerts (beta)
Scree Alerts — Privacy Notice (Beta)
Owner-review beta copy — not legal advice. Prepared for the manual private paid beta. Lawyer sign-off is parked for now and remains a required roadmap item before public checkout or scale.
Scree Alerts is operated by Cody Gray (operating as Scree Alerts) ("Scree", "we"), reachable at hello@screealerts.com and 434 Cougar St, Banff, AB T1L 1B1. Cody Gray is the person responsible for privacy at Scree — privacy questions, access requests, and complaints all go to the contact above.
This notice explains what we collect, how we use it, where it is stored, and how to control it.
The law we follow
Scree is based in Alberta, so we handle personal information under Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) — our primary private-sector privacy law — and under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) where information crosses provincial or national borders (for example, our payment, messaging, and hosting providers). We aim to meet PIPEDA-equivalent standards for everyone we serve, wherever in Canada you are.
What we collect
We collect only what we need to run a watch and support it:
- Your name and email address.
- The route/campsite scope and resources you want watched.
- Your consent record: whether you agreed to service messages, whether you opted in to optional updates, the timestamp, and the page you used.
- Support notes you choose to send us, and records of the alerts and receipts we send you.
- A coarse country code derived from your connection (we do not collect your street, city, or IP address), used only to understand where interest is coming from.
We do not ask for, and do not want, more than this. We do not collect payment card numbers — payment is handled by Stripe; we only see that a payment succeeded.
How we use it
- To confirm we can watch your approved route/campsite scope.
- To send the alerts you signed up for, plus setup, support, receipts, refunds, pause/cancel notices, and essential service updates.
- To send optional, non-essential updates only if you separately opted in.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Your consent
We collect and use your information with your consent. The service messages above (alerts, receipts, setup and cancellation notices) are necessary to deliver the watch you asked for. Any optional or promotional updates — such as a newsletter — require a separate opt-in that you can withdraw at any time, and we treat the newsletter as a different purpose from your Scree alerts (so signing up for one does not enrol you in the other). You can withdraw consent or ask us to stop at any time — see "Your choices".
Where your data is stored
Running the beta involves a few service providers, used only for their stated purpose: Stripe for payment, Cloudflare for our waitlist database and site infrastructure, Vercel for the website, and an email provider for messages. Some of these providers store or process data outside Alberta and outside Canada (for example, in the United States), where it may be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions. We use reputable providers and reasonable safeguards, and Cody Gray can answer questions about any of them at the contact above.
How long we keep it
- Watch and contact data: kept for the season we watch for you, plus a short period afterward for receipts and support, then deleted or anonymized — generally within about 12 months of your watch ending.
- Payment and accounting records: kept as long as the law requires (Canadian tax records are generally kept for six years).
- Consent and unsubscribe records: kept separately as a compliance record (so we can show we respected your choices under anti-spam law) and not deleted on the schedule above; we keep them only as long as needed for that purpose.
How we protect it
We use reasonable security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including encryption of the devices and databases that hold it and access limited to Cody Gray. If a breach of our security safeguards ever creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will notify you and the appropriate privacy regulator and keep a record of the incident, as the law requires.
Your choices
- See or correct your information: email hello@screealerts.com.
- Unsubscribe / pause / cancel: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or reply to ask.
- Delete your beta data: email hello@screealerts.com and we will remove it, except the minimal records we must keep for legal or accounting reasons.
We respond to access and correction requests as quickly as we reasonably can — within 45 days as Alberta PIPA allows, and usually within 30.
